This is my second such rangetop. I bought the first several years ago and had trouble with the spark ignition. It would spark continually after the burner was already lit. Ultimately the problem was traced to a wire pinched between two pieces of sheet metal. The second unit came about as a result of the gas overpressure problem in Lawrence, MA. (The gas company replaced damaged appliances with like units). Immediately after installation, the grill would not ignite even though there was a nice spark and plenty of gas. The service technician had to adjust the position of the ignitor spark to fix the problem. My final complaint is the design of the grill burner sheet metal and drip trays. It is a real pain to disassemble (and re-assemble) for cleaning. There are a lot of interlocking parts that all get very dirty very quickly and have so many bends, holes, and tabs that it is virtually impossible to clean. This cooktop is a fairly expensive appliance and I feel certain that a much better design of this section is possible.

This top has been in the remodeled kitchen for 7 years now and performs now as it did when new. My only picky issue is that the two 15K burners are not inline. So when a girdle is used, it is over the 20k & 15K burners or a 15K and the simmer burner. So it is a trick to get an even temperature across the griddle.

Avoid this unit with griddle

We bought this cooktop for our new home through Ferguson (www.ferguson.com). Supposedly we had a one-year warranty. During the warranty period we told the builder that the griddle, despite having a knob that reads up to 500 degrees, would not heat past 200. Months later, a repairman shows up, charges $105 to confirm that, yes, indeed it does not heat properly, and that our options are to "live with it" or pay an additional $500 for a new switch which may or MAY NOT fix the problem - no guarantee and no returns. We will never purchase another KitchenAid product again and will probably spend those $500 on a high quality unit to replace this 1-yr old unit and definitely will not buy it from Ferguson.
